“The
Wolf and the Dog”
Once evening, a
wolf was looking for food. He was very hungry. He saw some chickens in a
farmyard. He wanted to eat the chickens. But there was a dog in the yard, too.
The dog was big and strong. The wolf didn’t want to fight the dog, but he was
very, very hungry. He waited near the yard.
The wolf saw a
man come out of the house. The man gave some food to the dog and then went back
into the house.
“Good evening,”
the wolf called to the dog.
“Good evening,”
said the dog with his mouth full.
The wolf said,
“Do you get food every day?”
“Two times a
day”, said the dog. “I get breakfast in the morning and dinner in the evening.”
He ate some more. Then he looked at the wolf.” Are you hungry? Come live here
with me. This is good life. I help the man and he gives me food.”
The dog ate all
his dinner and sat down. He said to the wolf, “you are always running and
fighting. Your life is not easy. Come live here. Life is easy here.”
The wolf sat
down near the dog. He thought, ”Why not? I can eat every day here, and I can
have a friend.”
But then he
looked at the dog.
“What is the
under your ears?” he asked.
“What?” said the
dog.
“Look at your
neck! It’s all red!” said the wolf.
“Oh, that’s
nothing,” said the dog
“Nothing!” said
the wolf. “It’s terrible”
“No, no,” said
the dog. “It’s because of the chain. During the day, the farmer puts a chain on
my neck.”
“A chain!” said
the dog. “You have to stay here all day? You can’t run or hunt?”
“That all
right,” said the dog. “But I don’t care. I sleep all day. And at night I can
run around the farmyard.”
“Then no thank
you, my friend. I can’t stay here with you. I don’t want a chain on my neck.
“Good bye!”
And
wolf ran way, still hungry.
“The
Turtle and the Ducks”
Once there was a
turtle. He was not very happy. “Here I am on the ground,” He said. “I can’t go
fast. I can’t see things far way. I
can only see the ground and the grass. Poor, poor me”
Then
the turtle looked up at the sky. “Look at those birds,” he said. They go the
faraway places. They see many things. I want to be bird. I want to fly, too.”
Two
ducks stopped near turtle’
“Oh
ducks,” asked the turtle. “What can I do? I want to go to far places. I want to
see the world.”
“I think we can
help you,” said the ducks
“Can you,” asked
the turtle. “How?”
“You can fly
with as to Africa or America. You can see mountains, oceans, and cities--all
the things you want o see.”
“But how can I
fly?” asked the turtle.
“With a stick,”
said the ducks. “We can hold a stick in our mounts. You can hold on to it with
your mouth. Then we can carry you through the air.”
And that’s what
they did. The ducks went up in the air with the turtle. They flew for a long
time. The turtle saw many new things. He saw rivers and mountains and the sea.
He saw a city and lots of people.
The people also
saw the turtle. “A turtle in the air!” they said. Run, run to the queen.
There’s a flying turtle. She must see it”
The queen came out of her castle. “Where is
the turtle?” she asked.
“Here! Can’t you
see me?” shouted the turtle. But when he spoke, he opened his mouth. And when
he opened his mouth, he fell to ground and died.
